Connection to iEARN

Hi everybody-

How can we use this project and site as an extension of our iEARN activities?

I was thinking:
1) Students and teachers can make accounts and upload their 10.10.10 work on this site, but also post a link in the iEARN One Day forum for discussion there as well.

2) Teachers and older students can make their own accounts here (and make sure they identify themselves as iEARN members and join this group!) but younger students might be better off posting under their teacher or a class account, and restrict their discussions to the iEARN forum to protect their privacy and safety.

3) This isn't just a student project - teachers and administrators and their friends and family can make and post videos as well!

What do you think?

Sounds good. SO you recommend the kids having an account on iearn as well or just leave it under this one. ANd another thing, this is a video documentary, but isn;t the iearn a photo project? or can it also be a video \?

Hi Mike!

Students 13 and up can have their own account on ODOE; students of any age can have an account on iEARN. My own students will have both, but you are welcome to do whatever makes the most sense for you. I want to ensure that at least some of the discussions (and links to videos) are on the iEARN forum, however.

iEARN's "One Day in the Life" was originally a writing project; I've made a big push to add media as well. As a photography teacher myself, I've been pushing to incorporate captioned documentary photography, but other teachers' students have used all sorts of media, including video. That said, iEARN's server has been pretty lousy to date dealing with video (Up until now I've usually recommended posting videos on YouTube and then posting the link on iEARN for discussion. I'm hoping the upcoming new Collaboration Centre will correct this weakness.) So this is a chance to explore video as best we can - ODOE is primarily a video project (although I may experiment with stop-motion photography videos, perhaps.) Video is somewhat new to me - I'm learning along with everyone else!

I think, it's great idea but it would be more beneficial if more focused like we did in our previous 'One Day in My Life' projects of Oct and Feb.

I have another question re: pictures of students on videos, etc.
The concern is one of safety. In your videos, are you including people's names and where they live .... not full address, but cities? When it comes to children we must be careful. I teach high school students, but this can still be a concern. What are your thoughts and experiences thus far with things like this?

Mike, I also viewed your pics here. Are these your students? I was wondering if it was a good idea to post pictures of our students. Again, a view at security. What are your thoughts?

Hi Dorothy-

Don't worry too much about permissions, releases, etc. It can be crazy-making.

Most US newspapers (and their associated websites) never ask for permissions or releases for childrens' photos and they provide a lot of information ("Johnny Smith, 8, of Smithfield, enjoys an ice cream at the county fair.") I know plenty of professional photographers who never ask for releases (unless they're working in advertising or stock.) The law in the US, anyway, is almost always on the photographer's side, even with kids. Plus, virtually no child predators work from photographs of strangers' kids.

DO worry, however, about your school policies and nervous parents. Check to see if you have an existing policy on this (my school doesn't, at least as far as images an the internet go.) Send a note home informing kids' parents of the project. Don't let kids put their home address, phone number, or direct email on pubic work. You'll be fine.

I've been teaching high school photography for 15 years now in the USA, and have yet to get a complaint or a problem arise in terms of permission or releases.

Hi Mike,

I have since been advised by my school board that we must get release forms signed, which I plan to do. I also saw somewhere on this web site where this project was explained, about when they put together the video for the whole world, that release forms must be submitted as well. Isn't this true?

I will also send a letter home to the parents explaining what we are doing with the release forms.

I will also follow the format of using first names only. We feel that is safer.

I know that newspapers give full names, but with all that information now available online (newspaper articles on their news web sites), I expect that things will change in the future. Especially when photos can be lifted so easily from the news web sites ........ everyone knows the "screen print, crop, copy" process of obtaining anything off of websites.

I am a little surprised that I seem to be the only one here with this concern.

That's the safest route, Dorothy!
(Maybe I'm just making excuses for being lazy!)

Also - I was speaking from a USA perspective - I should be careful. Many countries have privacy laws that are much looser than the USA, but some are stricter. In France, for instance, I am told that people have a right to privacy even in public - so you can't photograph a stranger on a public street without permission in Paris... but you can in New York.

I don't know where Canada stands, as a nation...
