Who are you and what is your profession?
My Name Is Shawn Viens, and I am a professional DOP and Photographer based in Calgary, Alberta.
Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
I was brought up in a small town in Alberta, Canada. I grew playing hockey and also enjoyed snowboarding, hiking, biking, camping, fishing and really anything you can do out doors. I have also been taking photos and capturing moments since I was 4 years old.
What inspired you to be a filmmaker?
When I was 20 years old I bought a van, camperized it and drove from Canada all the way to Panama City, my goals on this trip were to learn how to surf, speak Spanish, learn to play guitar and most importantly film my first documentary. The trip was amazing and I found my passion for photography and cinematography.
I have not looked back since this trip, it was the beginning to my career and many travels all over the world filming and taking photos every where my adventures have taken me. I am very inspired by new cultures, people, and nature.
Who are your heros?
I admire and think of Johnny Cash as one of my heroes. He did it his own way.
What do you feel you want to shoot on 10.10.10?
I would love to shoot something that will change the world in a positive way, even if it is just in a small way. It would be great if I could film something that has to do with the environment, culture, wildlife or community.
Why is this important to you?
This is very intriguing and important to me because there are so many barriers in this world that do not allow us to work together to achieve common goals. This is such a great way to collaborate as artists, story tellers, and just human beings to tell the story about our world in 10.10.10!!!!!!!!!!!!!
