The World's Story is Yours to Tell

Today we are happy to present fimmaker Mercy Murugi, whose most recent film, Togetherness Supreme, won several African Academy Awards.

Who are you and what is your profession?

My name is Mercy Murugi. I am a film producer with a passion for human interest stories.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing, and what inspired you to be a filmmaker?
I was born in Nairobi, Kenya but grew up all over Kenya. I wanted to be a lawyer but hated the idea of being in school for so long. I used to write a lot in high school and knew that I wanted to tell stories. I went to film school to study writing and somehow, I ended up as a producer. I still want to write though.

Who are your heroes?
My heroes are the ordinary people who now and then make it to the news by doing great work that no one actually pays attention to but changes lives in a special way. The people that are not in the front line in the media, or on everybody’s lips, but in their communities, families, individuals go to sleep daily knowing that that person made their day worth living.

What story do you want to tell on 10.10.10?
Since I will be traveling and somehow I will have been through 3 continents on the 10th Oct, I will tell the story of my journey. This is symbolic to me as the my film, Togetherness Supreme, which will be showing at Vancouver Int’l Film Festival and I will be going to represent it, has been a journey for me.

Why is this important to you?
The story of Togetherness Supreme is an young artist’s journey in searching for peace in the midst of tribal conflict, betrayal, violence and uncertainty. I think my journey is one filled with hope, albeit uncertainty of what awaits the film after the festival.
