One Day on Earth

The World's Story is Yours to Tell

This week we are pleased to present One Day on Earth participant Martin Linss. Martin is a world class photographer, and cinematographer of feature films, commercials, and music videos. Martin was the 2nd unit dp for the recent film Notorious, about the life and death of Notorious B.I.G. (aka Christopher Wallace).

Who are you and what is your profession?

Martin Linss, born in Frankfurt Germany. Today I live in Venice, CA and work as a Director/DP and Photographer.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I came to the States and worked on Wall Street only to realize that my destiny lies in the artistic and not the financial world. Soon after my new found circle of friends pointed me in the right direction and i worked my available weekends PA-ing on then unknown director's Marcus Nispel's sets. I knew there and then what I wanted to do, funny how your carrier picks you. I enrolled in NYC's School of Visual Arts and graduated 94' with a degree in Film/Cinematography and Photography.

I grew up in the picturesque Bavarian countryside. Tradition and beauty has always been around. Art has been a huge part of my upbringing. My mother retired from a career as an architect and dedicated her creative outlet to painting, and sculpture. My family has spend numerous years in the Middle East and i was always exposed to influences of all different natures.

In juxtaposition i found myself living in the vibrant but not always safe East Village and Lower East side of New York. I spend countless hours training my vision and documenting my environment.

What inspired you to be a filmmaker?
I am inspired by anyone showing me a fresh angle on something I thought I knew. I am inspired by art in all shapes and form if it moves me and i see the artist soul. I am inspired by witty and clever interpretation, by the ability to show me something "small" and keep my attention.

Who are your heroes?
There is a long list, and i will not get into it, but someone i find incredible inspiring: Richard Branson, for his achievements in creating an empire, and always pushing the boundaries and building a brand with conscience; that should be the blueprint for a better future. He was chosen by the late Maharishi to be the last student he advised in the art of Vedic Meditation.

Hero: anyone that selflessly takes responsibility for another life, any selfless act of love deserves admiration and should inspire.

What story do you want to tell on 10.10.10?
I have not made up my mind about the story i want to tell on 10.10.10. Juggling a few ideas from "very thought-out" to improvisational. I am giving the concept of "one day" a lot of thought. Guess you will have to wait...

Why is this important to you?
I am a firm believer that we are moving into a time of conscious sharing, of global conciseness. I find the idea of this initiative fascinating and can't wait to see the result. Truly unpredictable, this can be a new approach in storytelling.
