In the Philippines alone, 40% of Filipinos starve as shown by the 2008 World Hunger Survey by Gallup International. Bayan-Anihan, translated in English ...as "community harvest", was borne out of a partnership between the Department of Agriculture and Gawad Kalinga to address the growing issue of hunger. It is powered by a multi-sectoral force including:
- local government units
- the academe such as the Association of Colleges of Agriculture in the Philippines
- non-government organizations such as Couples for Christ
- corporations & individuals
