World Mental Health Day
No health without mental health
10 October 2010
World Mental Health Day on 10 October raises public awareness about mental health issues. The Day promotes more open discussion of mental disorders, and investments in prevention and treatment services. The treatment gap for mental, neurological and substance use disorders is formidable especially in poor resource countries.
Physical and mental health are intertwined

October 10, 2010 is the end of President Noy’s first hundred days. It is every Filipino’s hundred days as well to show his love for his country. This is also the big celebration of Gk – World Hope Day – to mark our first 7 years of nation-building.

We invite those who share our affection for our beloved nation to join us celebrate with a ball and a bang on 10/10/10.

It is time to build our dream together: Americans helping us build the Filipino Dream as Filipinos have helped build the American Dream.

It is also time for me to end this piece with a prayer. My plane just landed at LAX and I can hardly wait to see my guapo brown American grandson Mikel at the gate.

Dear GOD, please make my people the sweet scent of hope to the weak and the weary of America, the country that has been good to them, but also, not to forget to care for the hopeless and the powerless in the Philippines that needs them… NOW. AMEN.

What is Kalinga sa Bayan?

Kalinga sa Bayan is a campaign to build an enabling environment where Filipinos can respond concretely to the call to care for the country by helping end poverty in the towns and cities where they come from through a strong public-private collaboration.

Helping your Hometown

It is a new season for the Philippines, and every Filipino throughout the world wants to help, but does not know how. Kalinga sa Bayan encourages Filipinos here and abroad to look at the towns and cities where they come from or where they currently reside, and decide to share their time and/or resources to support the priority needs and projects of their hometown.

People Power Over Poverty

The poverty in our country may seem complex and overwhelming, but together, we can overcome it. Inspired by People Power and the GK way, we know that we can be one people, united in the fight against poverty. Utilizing the Filipino bayanihan spirit, we can end poverty, one community and one town at a time. This can be achieved when all Filipinos work together to help address the interlocking social issues like peace, education, health, hunger and the environment.

Public-Private Collaboration

Poverty is so massive, and not one group can do it alone, not even government. But private sector cannot do it without the support of government. Kalinga sa Bayan encourages a strong public-private sector collaboration to help leverage on limited government resources and mobilize the private sector to participate in nation-building.

Onground and Online

Onground, Kalinga sa Bayan is a movement composed of Kalinga teams - organized groups that mobilize people and resources to create bite-size projects that serve as solutions to the most urgent needs of a town.

Online, Kalinga sa Bayan’s platform is www.gk1world.com - a website designed to provide information about the various towns and cities that Kalinga Teams can support, as well as the relevant priority projects that are being planned. This allows teams all over the world to share what they are doing for their towns, collaborate for projects, and invite friends to participate and help grow the network online and onground.
