Less than 20% of rural Indians can read and write more than their own names-even fewer can do simple arithmetic. Less than 20% of children living in rural India graduate from high school. Girls are twice a likely to be illiterate as boys.
Communities Rising is dedicated to providing access to quality educational opportunities for all Indians, regardless of race, gender, caste, or religion. Communities Rising provides out-of-school programs for impoverished children and youth in rural India, in order to actively and effectively support their learning and development across the day and throughout the year.
We focus on literacy, math, English and computer skills, with emphasis placed on education for India’s Dalits, especially the girls.
Communities Rising strongly believes that international volunteer service plays a fundamental role in building global peace and stability. In support of that belief, Communities Rising provides both short term and long term opportunities for volunteers to work with our educational programs. With greater support, Communities Rising can provide more children with the opportunity to attend out-of-school programs that can provide them with positive academic, social, prevention, and health benefits.
