Who are you and what is your profession?

My name is Rick Macomber, and I have been a photojournalist for over 30 years. During my life I've been passionately documenting the human condition, gleaning personal and emotional stories from people in some manner and telling them either through the use of film or video. I have been an Emmy Award winning television news gatherer for CBS in Boston as well as a freelance DP, cameraman and editor for my own small company. I have covered news assignments all over New England as well as major news stories around the globe, including a series on Cambodian refugee camps in Thailand, the 50th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France and the horror of 9-11 from Ground Zero in NYC.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
I grew up on peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches and Captain Kangaroo in Chelsea, a small, diverse city across the Mystic River just north Boston. I was either drawing, sketching or taking pictures ever since I can remember. I'm also a self taught musician and snowboarder. My best production ever has been my two lovely daughters.

What inspired you to be a filmmaker?
I'd have to say it happened the moment I held my father's Kodak Brownie 8mm home movie camera in my hands. It all began innocently enough with the illegal activity of unauthorized filmmaking at rock concerts in the 70s. That's when it all clicked. That's when I realized that even under extreme anxiety and the threat imminent danger and possible arrest... I could clandestinely lock that viewfinder onto my subject and capture the shot. Straight out of high school I found myself traversing the USA in a VW Microbus. Of course Dad's Kodak Brownie was with me all the way. I was on my way to becoming a filmmaker.

Who are your heroes?
Having interviewed countless celebrities in the sports and entertainment world, I've never been one to have idols or heroes. But if I were to indulge in that type of behavior, I'd have to place Martin Luther King Jr. at the top of the list. I think he did more to bring awareness and create change in our society during my lifetime with his work as a civil rights activist than any other man or woman. I would also have to give some props to Quentin Tarantino as my favorite director and Jack Nicholson as my favorite actor.

What story do you want to tell on 10.10.10?
On 10-10-10 I would really like to tell a story about human emotion. A story about love. A story that will make you feel good about the human condition at a time in our lives when we're plagued by corporate greed, growing poverty, unemployment and the elimination of the middle class.

Why is this important to you?
Any time you can bring awareness to people on a large scale... it will be important.
