The World's Story is Yours to Tell

Presenting..... Miklós

Diving Around Phi Phi island from Miklós Volner on Vimeo.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
"Already more than two decades has passed since I have been begging my father to buy me a "real" diving mask in order to get prepared for a seaside summer-holiday in Greece. That was my first encounter with the amazing underwater world. From that time my connection with the sea became so strong, that it left it's fingerprint on every moment of my life.

Responding to the call of the blue I have started a diving career as a freediver until I ended up as a SCUBA instructor. Being a part-timer Master Diver Trainer has still not filled the geographic gap between me and the sea (Hungary does not have any 'wet' borders), so in 2005 I've invested in a diving-center by the Adriatic sea in Croatia (www.octopussy.hu) with my girlfriend and my brother.

People say, the best way to get bored of your hobby is to choose it as your job, but I experienced it the other way. After thousands of dives and a few hundred students I'm still crazy about the sea and it's fantastic creatures. I always wanted to share the underwater dreamworld with as many people as possible. This enthusiasm forced me to be a dedicated fan of underwater imaging.

In Hungary I've published a lot of my photos as illustration to my articles in different travel- and diver magazines, but a few egyptian and thai dive-centers are also using my pictures to decorate their webpage. In the winter of 2009 an Adriatic fish guidebook has been published in Hungary also illustrated with my shots.
I've created this website to show the underwater world as I see it trough my diving googles to everyone who might be interested.

Who are you and what is your profession?
Most answers to this questions can be found above. Originaly I've been graduated as an agricultural engineer but have never worked a minute as one. After university I had to join the army, where I've finished 9 month later as a lieutenant. Than I have worked for a multinational company as a sales manager for 3 years, and 2 years as the director of sales. Than I bought my DC and you already know the rest of the story.

What inspired you to be a filmmaker?
Well, when I was a kid every Saturday I was watching the morning movies with my little brother about nature. We grew up on the movies of Jacqes Cousteau, and Sir David Attenborrough. My favorites were always the underwater scenes. It was my strongest dream to get to places like those, learn to dive and make such movies myself. About 8 years ago as a SCUBA instructor I have lead a diving trip on the red sea. An English guy came up to our boat asking me if I allow him to make a video from my group that day. I was more than happy about the idea. I was watching him working with us all day, and than in the evening I saw what he did. That night I already knew I was going to be a videographer. It took me 7 years to get all circumstances ready to become one.

Who are your heroes?
My greatest hero was Jacqes Cousteau before. I would not be able to go underwater without the SCUBA equipment he designed. Later I've seen some of his movies where he and his team have slaughtered thousands os sea creatures calling it scientific experiment. Since than I don't pay so much respect on him. I'm still a great fan of Sir David Attenborrough and his movies. I also consider as heroes all of the different activists (for eg. Greenpeace) fighting for nature or animal life. I respect their courage how they fight for nature with all kinds of means, no matter if even their life gets in danger.
But my personal little hero is my girlfriend, Sylvia, who has sacrificed her career, left her country, her relatives and friends just to support me in fulfilling my dreams.

What do you feel you want to shoot on 10.10.10?
On that day If everything works out well, I'm going to be on a liveaboard safary-boat heading deep south in Egypt, to get nice shots from sharks and all kinds of fish!

Why is this important to you?
I guess the question is about why I'd like to take part in the project. Since I started videography I'm waiting for the opportunity to take part in something important, something challenging. What can be more important and exciting than a world-wide project like this?
