The World's Story is Yours to Tell

Who are you and what is your profession?

My name is Corretta Singer. I am a self-taught animator / filmmaker currently doing motion graphics for commercials.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
I was born in Switzerland and have been living in Jamaica for most of my life. I was always the artist in the family, drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I became fascinated with the idea of moving images and  breathing life into characters I could create while telling a story, so I focused on doing animation.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Everyone watches movies…There’s a sort of magic to filmmaking. I loved to write short stories when I was little and it was appealing to think that there was this possibility to tell those stories with moving pictures, sound and music. It was always fascinating to me that there was a piece of technology (video camera) that could capture images and play them back. It could capture an event or series of events and hold them to be watched again and again…like a memory that could be refreshed with each viewing and could be played back and most importantly, shared. Not only that but I could use these images to tell a story, visually. The possibilities are as endless as the imagination.

Who or what do you most admire?
I admire my Uncle, he has come a far way and beat overwhelming odds and become quite successful. All he had dreamed as a child has come true. I hope to inherit half his strength. I also admire nature, its resilience and beauty, it’s harmony and adaptability. I think that we as humans can learn a lot from nature.

What did you film on 10.10.10?
I was hoping to be in Jamaica for 10. 10. 10…but my Uncle had taken my Mom, Brother (who is also a filmmaker) and I on a Mediterranean Holy Land Cruise. So on 10. 10.10 I was in Haifa, Israel, enjoying the sights, Capernaum, the sea of Galilee, the mount of the Beatitudes and the Galilee Boat…I must say, I can’t complain, it was a marvelous experience. The history and the culture is so overwhelmingly alive. The people, so proud of their history and so willing to share it's stories. It is a fantastic place that I would love to visit again.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?
It’s hard to say…as I learned from the 10.10.10 experience, who knows where I’ll be on that day. But such is life…it is unpredictable and wonderful. However, wherever I am, wherever life has taken me, I will film something and share it with the world.
