We are often asked this question: 'Why use a Starlight, infra red or thermal camera, why not just use a regular camera and lights?' ... At night, visible light is a powerful thing, and its presence completely alters the behaviour of many creatures – in particular, predators. Filming nocturnal predators with visible light at night is pointless if you are trying to film what they actually do. Any visible light will alter the prey they select, alter how the prey escapes (or not) and the method the predators use to get it. Visible light will also alter the relationship between all the animals present, prey or predator, sometimes causing fights, at other times causing panic. Using visible light and daylight cameras also means you have a very restricted range. A 2 kilowatt light is unlikely to go much more than 50m."

One Day on Earth: Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
Martin: I was born in New Zealand, and studied to be a documentary photographer before realising that my true interest lay in the natural world.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Martin: It's hard to find a precise reason why I became a filmmaker. K.N. Singh at Guildford College of Art was the first person to put a movie camera in my hand. The work of
Oxford Scientific Films in the seventies and eighties, the BBC series 'The World About Us', David Attenborough's 'Zoo Quest' and of course, Life on Earth.

One Day on Earth: Who or what do you most admire?
Martin: David Attenborough is a great inspiration, along with other filmmakers, such as Hugh Miles, Alan Root, as well as late 19th century explorers and naturalists, such as Alfred Russell Wallace.

One Day on Earth: What do you have?
Martin: Far too many cameras who's obsolescence is always approaching at an ever increasing rate - and a production company dedicated to seeing the natural world in new ways.

One Day on Earth: What are you planning on filming for 12.12.12?
Martin: Flocking starlings as they come in to roost in a reed bed. Since a lot of our work is focussed on night and the boundary between night and day, the starlings give us an opportunity to try some new things - in case we discover something different - and bring some fresh images to one of the most spectacular wildlife spectacles anywhere in the world (if the starlings behave themselves).
Profile Spotlight: Agus Makkietag:onedayonearth.ning.com,2012-12-05:4358628:BlogPost:4472772012-12-05T03:30:00.000ZProfile Spotlightshttps://onedayonearth.ning.com/profile/ProfileSpotlights

One Day on Earth: Who are you and what is your profession?
François: I am François Grumelin-Sohn aka Kadavre Exquis. I received a graphic design education, before moving to animation & moving image. I am also composing music.

One Day on Earth: Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
François: I always drew and I decided my life would be based on that. In graphic design, I learnt a lot about the image, but I figured out I was more inspired when it was moving so I moved on to animation even if I still continue to practice graphic design and drawing.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
François: The fact that it was the medium using everything I was truly in love with, image, music, story. It is a unique combination which can be rarely found in other department of art.

One Day on Earth: Who are you and what is your profession?
Danilo: My name is Danilo Parra and my profession is the constant search to be professional which I hope never ends and only gets me closer. That profession has lately been documentary filmmaking and some short form narrative pieces as well. My other profession I am farther from and also keeps me excited: making music. My goal is to be equal at both arts and to bring them together.

One Day on Earth: Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
Danilo: I was born in San Jose, California from a Russian Jewish mother and a Chilean father in a very creative and athletic household that has brought me to make a living at what I enjoy doing.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Danilo: I was inspired to be a filmmaker from the first time I saw the Shining, which was also the first time I cried from being scared and those confusing emotions were something I wanted to learn more about and communicate myself.

One Day on Earth: What are you planning on filming for 12.12.12?
Danilo: What I plan on filming on 12.12.12 may be something that relates to the date. Hopefully it will be something that only happens once on that date and never happens again. That's my goal. I still haven't found out what that might be yet though...

One Day on Earth: Who are you and what is your profession?
Mirra: I'm a filmmaker. My job (as half of The Perennial Plate duo) is to travel the world making documentary shorts about local/sustainable food - or rather the amazing people who are producing it. Oh, and I'm a vegetarian and Daniel is not - which makes things interesting when filming documentaries about real food.
Daniel: I'm a chef and a filmmaker. Or I was a chef, and now I make short documentaries about sustainable food around the globe, cooking along the way.

One Day on Earth: Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
Mirra: I grew up in Minneapolis and graduated college with a degree in Psychology. Then I moved to New York to study dance, then waitress, followed by a few years in advertising, a stint as a dog walker, and finally a year or so as cheese monger. Obviously, when that was all done, the natural next step was to become a filmmaker.
Daniel: I was brought up mostly in England. My parents were big travelers, so I was raised with visits to India and Morocco and Vietnam. They wanted us to be anything but "normal." So, I supposed, traveling the world making movies is just what they hoped I would do. After University I started making movies and cooking at the same time. I'd finish cooking and go home to edit. It was tiring. So I combined these passions into one project.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Mirra: I love hearing people's stories, and this job provides incredible access to those people and those stories from around the world. But truthfully, before Daniel handed me a camera and asked me to film him butchering a lamb back in 2010, I would not have been able to tell you that this is what I would be doing, or how life would have turned out.
Daniel: I would say I like to be creative and encourage positive dialogue. So it's not as much about the filmmaking and more about getting to create art and make connections between people that might not have the chance to meet in real life.

One Day on Earth: Who or what do you most admire?
Mirra: Kindness.
Daniel: I'm a big fan of the classics: Gandhi, MLK Jr, Oscar Romero.

One Day on Earth: What do you have?
Mirra: Two backpacks, a couple cameras, a passport and tickets to Japan, China, India, Sri Lanka, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Turkey, South Africa, Ethiopia, Argentina and Mexico.
Daniel: I have an amazing job.

One Day on Earth: What do you need?
Mirra: Probably better health insurance.
Daniel: For it to never end.

My training is that of an autodidact, correcting my mistakes, evolving and to be my own biggest critic. I founded Aquawork in 1994, the company I direct and from which I work in projects of underwater filming and nature.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Rafa: What really inspires me is being an underwater cameraman, being under the sea. Being a filmmaker is just a way to show what I see and feel.

One Day on Earth: Who or what do you most admire?
Rafa: I admire people who have a big passion for what they do and also have sufficient sensitivity and professionalism to carry it out. Among them is Leandro Blanco, one of the most international of Spanish underwater filmmakers.

One Day on Earth: What do you have?
Rafa: The opportunity to enjoy and feel the Ocean every day.

One Day on Earth: What do you need?
Rafa: A greater awareness about how badly we handle the sea, and how we mistreat it. I need to convey to people the need to protect our oceans through knowledge.

One Day on Earth: What are you planning on filming for 12.12.12?
Rafa: A fantastic project that unites people around the world for a great common cause. We have an enormous responsibility to be good administrators.
12.12.12 is Coming!tag:onedayonearth.ning.com,2012-10-25:4358628:BlogPost:4280752012-10-25T03:30:00.000ZOne Day On Earthhttps://onedayonearth.ning.com/profile/KyleRuddick

Hi One Day on Earthers!

It has been particularly busy for the past several months in both the New York and LA office - but I hope you all have gotten the periodic mass emails.

If you do get the messages, then you know of the awesome success of the global screening - 160 countries joined in. . . it was a dream come true. The picture below was taken in the flagship screening in the General Assembly:

What a day! You can find more images from around the world HERE.

We are excited to work to continue to share the film and hope to ease into more regular distribution, starting with a one-week theatrical run in NY and LA in June (tickets HERE) . The opening week box-office will be going to local charities, a model we are hoping will succeed so that other independent filmmakers can use it too.

As we plan distribution for the 10.10.10 film, the editing team is digging through the 11.11.11 footage; there are lots and lots to do on that front as well. We are still collecting raw files, so I hope you all have kept them safe!

June is going to be a great month for us: Kyle will join me in NY where we will present at the Vimeo awards, we'll be connecting with dozens of non-profits via the screening fundraisers, and we plan on getting a lot of "housekeeping done" on the 12.12.12 planning. Not to mention, of course, it is summer (sorry southern hemisphere members, its our turn!).

Best,

Brandon

Empty Cupboard

You open your cupboard. It’s bare. You open your refrigerator, nothing but a few condiments there. As your dog reminds you, even his bowl is bare. What to do? Well, if you are like the protagonist of a wonderful little film called “Soup To Nuts,” you “get up offa that thing” and get to work.

Creating a meal in one day

You ransack your garden for anything that has survived the frost, you gather plants and berries from the surrounding area, you hunt rabbit, you fish, and you get it done. Then you bring it all home, cook it up and serve a feast to your friends:

At_Films response to One Day On Earth was to make a film in one day, about making a meal in one day, without buying any ingredients. What really makes this a little gem is the dual nature of the project. Both the film and the meal were made in a day, the same day, which of necessity gives both a handmade improvisational feel.

How much of the food did At and Alex know was there? It doesn’t matter. It had to be done on 11.11.11 and anything could have happened throughout the night of 11.10.11. We could have had a movie about hunger and it might have been equally as wonderful (if sadder).

Art of Maori Descent

The art of fire dancing is said to have originated with the Maori tribesmen of New Zealand, who used weighted balls tied to strings—Poi— as weapons. Later the word Poi came to describe not only the ball and string apparatus, but the art form of wielding them in performance storytelling, where every movement has a certain meaning. This art form can be seen in various tourist, island locales, though lighting the balls on fire was only one particular trick.

For fun and for therapy

Over the years, different people and cultures have influenced the art of fire twirling and added their own unique flare. Many juggle different flaming objects, while others draw from other disciplines, like ribbon dancing, in their routines. Many fire manipulation enthusiasts say their interest quickly grew into addiction, as the physical demands of the art make for great physical exercise, while the flowing beauty of twirling can be very therapeutic.

Variations of fire dancing can now be found across the globe, as we see Milka practicing from Berlin in “Fire Passion,” by Apeiron Films. Watch her as she lulls us into a fiery calm, and try to imagine the story her movements tell.

History of excellence

Stone carving, a traditional craft, known as early as the prehistoric period, has been practiced for centuries in Orissa, and has reached the highest levels of excellence due to the disciplined practice of generations.

A very rich tradition

Nested on the east coast of India, the State of Orissa (officially spelled Odisha) is famous for its art and architecture. For many centuries, the Orissan sculptors expressed their creativity in numerous stunning images, inspired both by religion and nature.

These artists’ hands can turn out everything: nayika and mithuna figures, yakshas and yakhis (the male and female deities associated with ancient fertility cults), holy musicians, horses, elephants, and soldiers as well as sculptures depicting everyday’s themes, like hunting, dancing, and family life.

Art for the modern times

The experienced artisans of Orissa are comfortable carving any type of stone that India has to offer. Using tools of different shapes and sizes such as hammers and chisels, (here they call them 'Muna,' 'Patili,' 'Martual,' 'Thuk-Thuki' and 'Nihana') they can easily shape anything from the soft white soapstone, known as Khadipathara to the hardest of all black granite, known as Mugunipathara.

One can see the concentration on their face, as they envision the figure that will burst out of the stone, moving their hands with ease and handling their tools with craft. This is commercial art for tourists and wealthy locals - and yet it repeats the eternal miracle of a rock transforming from a shapeless block into a gracious deity, archer, or female dancer.

Who are you and what is your profession?

I work as a producer at two different companies; Swedish Web Editors and Preamp. We produce corporate films and documentaries.

During my 37 years of walking on our beautiful earth I've lived in Sweden. I was born in the small village of Simrishamn in the Southern part of Sweden, I grew up in the sleep town of Vellinge and since 1996 I live in Sweden's third largest city, Malmö.

Since 1992 I've run my own company with in IT, but my goal has always been to work within film and theater. In 1994 I decided to attend an acting school, but realized soon that I enjoyed everything around a production more then acting. So I decided to find my way into film and theater in a different way. In 1996 I studied to become a digital animator, but after one year I realized that the 3D-industry in Sweden was to small and I enjoyed everything around the production more then animating. So I continued to find the right way for me to work within film and theater. In 2007 I started my film company Preamp and quickly realized that this was the right way for me to work within the film industry, by just doing it!

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

At my 10th birthday I got my first computer - a Spectrum ZX81. At the age of thirteen I joined the computer club in my hometown and soon I became one of the youngest computer science teachers in Sweden. To this day I still teach and lecture, but these days the topic is film production.

As a boy I had a hard time sitting still and therefor I had many hobbies. Of course the computers, but also horseback riding, karate, theater acting, singing in choir and filming with my dads super 8. I had a big interest in finding out how stuff worked, resulting in many broken toys and electric appliances. When my own toys where investigated I continued with my kid brothers and then with my dads tools. I still explore the inner parts of cameras, computers and other gadgets. They rarely works afterwards.

I grew up with my two brothers and my parents. In school I had trouble sitting still in class and sadly I didn't really attend school from the age of fifteen and up. Today I know that what I needed was a different way of learning then the traditional way. Some brains work in different ways. These days I have great benefit of having a brain that works in a different way.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

My grandfather Stig was a stills photographer and worked as a war correspondent in Sweden/Denmark during the second world war. Both before and after the war he was as a news correspondent and a photographer for the Swedish Royal family. Our house was filled with boxes containing pictures taken by him. Pictures of hanged nazi soldiers in the docks of Copenhagen, victims of the holocaust arriving to swedish harbors, the Swedish King proudly presenting a shoot duck and so on.

His pictures has inspired me to tell a stories with out using words.

My grandmother Gullan, whom I never meet, passed away in her fifties. She has always been a bit of mystic woman for me, only described by parents and through photos. A small, but very strong woman with sweet, yet intensive brown eyes. The unknown around her has inspired me to find out more about people around me, but I always leave something to the unknown.

Both my grandfather Stig and my grandmother Gullan where variety artist in a young age and continued with singing and dancing though-out their life's. I guess the stories and pictures from their life inspired me to attend acting school in 1994.

My grandfather Karl-Erik had different types of nine-five jobs through out his life. During the second world war he was stationed around Sweden practically all the war. Just waiting for the germans and the russians to come. Six years of waiting and gladly nobody came.

My grandfather Karl-Erik may have live a quiet and still life, but he was a master of telling stories. He told the stories straight forward, just as they happened. The stories may have been simple, but the way he told them made them unique and very interesting. I will remember his stories as long as I live. His way of telling a story from something simple is one of my big inspirations.

My grandmother Anna-Lisa was a classic housewife grandmother, who poured her love over us all the time. Her way of giving unconditional love is not only an inspiration, its also the way I try to live my life.

Who or what do you most admire?

People who tell the truth and who has a good heart. I've always admired all my grandparents, but also my parents for their good heart and honest way of living.

Two people whom I never meet, but admire never the less are my great grandfather and great grandmother. They both achieved very much during their life. My great grandfather was blind, but managed to be a well respected opera singer and a theater play director. My great grandmother was a scriptwriter and also Swedens first female film director (second in the world).

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I filmed my grandfather Karl-Erik during an every day morning coffee. We talked about his life and about his wife, my grandmother. This was my first own project, meaning I didn't have any of my co-workers to help me. I did everything by myself, nearly... I couldn't have done it without grandfather Karl-Erik. A couple of months later he passed away. All the way to the end he kept asking me if I heard something from the americans about our little film. He enjoyed the result very much. He became 94 yrs old.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I'll probably film something thats close to my heart, but I am not really sure what to film...yet. One thing is for sure, I'll visit my grandfathers grave and have a coffee with him.
Profile Spotlight: B.A. Van Den Boogaardtag:onedayonearth.ning.com,2011-09-26:4358628:BlogPost:1649042011-09-26T19:30:00.000ZProfile Spotlightshttps://onedayonearth.ning.com/profile/ProfileSpotlights

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

From an early age I spend a lot of time in nature. Studying all kinds of wildlife. I also did some photography but couldn't afford a decent telelens. I studied environmental management with nature conservation as specialty. When my sons were younger I picked up a nice video camera (8 years ago). I started making some wildlife video's but couldn't get the results I hoped for. I did like the combination of movement and sound. It captured far more of the experience than photos. When HD video came I bought a new camera and was very pleased with the results although it wasn't much of a telelens for birds and macro wasn't that great. Last year I bought a Canon 550d (T2i) and finally could capture wildlife in a quality close to photo quality.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I now can capture nature and wildlife as I experience it. Invite people to the world I love so much. I like to inspire people to go outside and enjoy nature. It doesn't have to be rare or special just the basic birds around the house give you so much to enjoy. I also like to show other people enjoying nature. Normal people like your neighbor or friend. See how they spend and enjoy their free time and why don't you? There are a lot more things that makes video making interesting. When making a movie I feel like I have to push all my skills to the limit and beyond. There are so many aspects you have to do at once. It is always so challenging. You have to get all the shots, mood and sound at a certain moment and know you have a story worth telling and continuity between shots to tell it like you want to.

Who or what do you most admire?

I admire the DSLR video making community where so many enthusiastic people share their knowledge and work on the internet. There is so much collective innovation and creativity you feel inspired by everyone. There is a huge amount of information available. If you have an issue with something? Just look it up or asked for it on the many forums and people help you out. I learn every day.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I went to a bird hide near my house. Bird photographers and nature lovers come here especially during this time because of the migratory birds. I knew I could rely on enough wildlife and people to tell their story. The weather forecasts were promising. My first thought was to portrait the photographers. How they are passionate about their hobby. Spend their hours waiting for the right moment. The moments of joy and disappointment. Beside that I wanted to show other visitors and their motivations. I hoped to interview women to show some difference in how they enjoy nature. When the older women started talking about her friend that died it felt so intimate and I had to fit this somehow into the whole story. After I finished the first concept I explicitly asked her if she agreed with the content. Otherwise I would have left it out. After I published the movie on 'one day on earth' she showed it to the family of her girlfriend and they were very pleased with this movie. As it brought back so many nice memories of her. Just how they remembered her.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I haven't thought about it. I intend to finish a couple of projects before that. The first thing that comes in mind are colorful mushrooms, and autumn leaves. Maybe covering an excursion from the local nature organization. I hope with a lot of kids. That would be great. Another great time to complete something worth watching.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
I grew up in Colorado, USA and have lived here most of my life. When I was young my parents moved out of the ‘burbs and built their own solar home up in the foothills. It was kind of a small farm with goats, chickens, rabbits, pigs, and two ducks. It’s given me lots of strange stories from childhood to bore people with now. I studied English and history in college, which has been entirely useful in my career of filling up my bookshelf.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
There was this Italian film “Cinema Paradiso” I saw back in the late 1980’s that was just enchanting. Perhaps because it was about a film director and the magic of movies, but that film always roused my desire to create my own films. Other films over the years have of course inspired me, but particularly the films of Jean Pierre Jeunet and Krzystof Kieslowski.

A number of documentaries have shown me the potency of film as a medium to reveal important issues. I see these films and I think “I could do that. I know a couple of stories that need to be told; a few people that need a voice.”
The technological advances of digital video and computer-based editing have also allowed me to pursue this insanity. It is amazing what can be created with a simple camera and computer. Ok... so not to kiss up to Vimeo, but recently I’ve been astonished and humbled by what “real” filmmakers are loading up to the site. Beautiful films!

Who or what do you most admire?
Do we admire those who resemble us or those who are different? I suppose I admire those people with qualities that I would like to strengthen within myself. I look up to those people who have listened to their inner passion and sought out a directed purpose to their lives, and to those that have risked everything for a cause larger than themselves. Obviously, Mohandas Gandhi, Mother Theresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. are on the list, but also people today like the Sea Shepherd crew, the gregarious Steve Irwin, Michael Fay (Explorer in Residence at National Geographic who walked across the jungles of Gabon and instigated the creation of 13 national parks in the country), the visionary Steve Jobs of Apple, and many other artists, musicians, and writers.

I am also constantly awed by nature. The rocks, plants, trees and all the animals scurrying around on the Earth are so interesting and complex. Weather, especially when I’m stuck out in it, always impresses me. The speed and force of an approaching storm is something to admire even if it is pounding me senseless. And after, the sun breaks through and the receding clouds are often spectacular. I’m fortunate to live where I can step out the door and experience the power and fragile beauty of the natural world every day.

What did you film on 10.10.10?
I decided to film something about trees. I started the day out filming the sun rising behind some trees near my house. A tree I had planted in my yard a few years ago had grown too large for the area, so my wife Heather and I filmed the process of moving that tree to a new location. After that, we interviewed some people who lost their home to a forest fire. The idea was to make a longer film combining a few more segments about trees, but the other bits didn’t turn out so well. I found that the three short films didn’t really go together as a single story, but worked okay as individual pieces.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?
Since that’s Veterans/Armistice Day, I thought I might do something about that. I’m not a veteran, but I know a few of them, and I might interview them and their experiences of war and being in the military. I’m probably the exact opposite of a soldier so it should be an interesting challenge. I’m sure a lot of people will be filming something about Veterans’ Day too, so I hope it’s not too cliché of a subject. I think I might do another time-lapse as well. I found this great jumble of boulders and rock spires that could look amazing at sunrise, particularly if there’s fresh snow.

I was brought up in a small town in Alberta, Canada. I have also been taking photos and capturing moments since I was 4 years old.

What inspired you to be a filmmaker?

When I was 20 years old I bought a van, camperized it and drove from Canada all the way to Panama City, my goals on this trip were to learn how to surf, speak Spanish, learn to play guitar and most importantly film my first documentary. The trip was amazing and I found my passion for photography and cinematography.

I have not looked back since this trip, it was the beginning to my career and many travels all over the world filming and taking photos every where my adventures have taken me. I am very inspired by new cultures, people, and nature.

Who are your heros?

I admire and think of Johnny Cash as one of my heroes. He did it his own way.

What do you feel you want to shoot on 10.10.10?

I would love to shoot something that will change the world in a positive way, even if it is just in a small way. It would be great if I could film something that has to do with the environment, culture, wildlife or community.

Why is this important to you?

This is very intriguing and important to me because there are so many barriers in this world that do not allow us to work together to achieve common goals. This is such a great way to collaborate as artists, story tellers, and just human beings to tell the story about our world in 10.10.10!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One Day On Earth to meet with the United Nationstag:onedayonearth.ning.com,2010-04-07:4358628:BlogPost:5862010-04-07T06:00:00.000ZNewshttps://onedayonearth.ning.com/profile/Press

On April 13th, we will be meeting with the United Nations to discuss collaboration and our shared interest in achieving the 2015 United Nations Millennium Development Goals. We will be presenting to the UN Communications Group along with representatives throughout the UN system. By forming diplomatic relationships, we hope to expand our distribution of educational materials and equipment. We are also hopeful that these relationships will help extend our access to the more socially distant areas of the world.
