Keep it Semplice

Phil, with his missions, wants 'simply' to mix, to dirty himself with a world which is not his one.
He wants to contaminate, in his way of seeing, in his approach with others; he wants to enter different groups' everyday life carrying out methods of his own, using stratagems to overcome morphologic and linguistic differences.
Phil creates a story with you and for you. He snaps you, a lot, always, and then he returns you the trace of story which he constructed for the group.
He gives it back to you quickly trying, despite the distance, to enact a human-chain device. His prints may arrive within little brown envelops, always the same, always of his own (you immediately recognise that they came out of his hands), or transformed into postcards that coming out of his door arrive to yours knocking on a sudden.
Anyway, your relation gets closer, he knows your story, sees your changes, enters your privacy with delicacy (despite the impetuosity of his behaviour, his full and involving laugh) and humour.
Intimacy becomes consolidated because in him there is the scoffing irony of the medium he uses.
There is no false redundancy of the holy and mystic act as in a certain way to be photographers: 'you get what you see'. There is, in contrast, the democracy of a shared use of what his doing produces when he meets you.
Most important is, as it always should be, what is inside the photo, the emotion you feel when the act is given you back, the generous and kind gesture to ask for your complicity in order to be able to take part in an everyday life.
Of course, which everyday life only he knows, as a unique demand of his being deeply English, white, man, bearded, unpredictable, alien, barefoot, hyper-kinetic, deep, careful, creative, restless, smoker, mechanic, PHOTOGRAPHER.


KEEP IT SEMPLICE

Phil, con le sue mission, vuole "semplicemente" mescolarsi, sporcarsi con
un mondo che non è il suo.
Vuole contaminarsi, nel suo modo di vedere, nel suo approccio con gli
altri, vuole entrare nella quotidianità di diversi gruppi attuando
modalità che gli sono proprie, usando stratagemmi per superare differenze
morfologiche e linguistiche.
Phil crea una storia con te e per te. Ti fotografa, tanto, sempre, e poi
ti restituisce quella traccia di storia che ha costruito per il gruppo.
Te la rende velocemente cercando, nonostante la distanza, di attuare un
meccanismo di passamano. Le stampe ti possono arrivare dentro a delle
buste marroni, sempre uguali, sempre le sue (tu riconosci subito che sono
cose uscite dalle sue mani), oppure facendo diventare le stampe delle
cartoline che uscendo dalla sua porta arrivano alla tua bussando
all'improvviso.
In ogni caso il rapporto diventa intimo, lui sa la tua storia, vede i tuoi
cambiamenti, è entrato nella tua intimità con delicatezza (nonostante
l'irruenza del comportamento, la risata piena e coinvolgente) e ironia.
L' intimità si è consolidata perché in lui c'è la dissacrante ironia del
mezzo che usa. Non c'è la falsa ridondanza dell'atto sacro e mistico di un
certo modo di essere fotografi. C'è, invece, una democrazia dell'utilizzo
condiviso di quello che il suo fare produce quando ti incontra.
L'importante, come sempre dovrebbe essere, è quello che c'è dentro le foto,
l'emozione che provi quando ti viene restituito l'atto, il gesto generoso
e gentile di chiedere la tua complicità per riuscire a far parte di una
quotidianità.
Naturalmente quale quotidianità lo sa solo lui, come unica rivendicazione
del suo essere profondamente inglese, bianco, uomo, barbuto,
imprevedibile, scalzo, ipercinetico, profondo, attento, creativo,inquieto,
fumatore, meccanico, FOTOGRAFO.
