selling charcoal at a transit site

A returnee walks past a pile of charcoal. A h*** is dug, wood is piled in, then sand covers the wood and through a small h*** the mound the wood is set alight. The process is time consuming and involves hard labour. After the pile has smoked for 3 days the charcoal can be sold.
