Call to Action: Extinction is forever! You are the key to stopping this irreversible destruction of Cambodia’s wildlife.
Cambodia is in the midst of an environmental crisis: Wildlife trafficking is a multi-billion dollar black market trade that is rapidly emptying Cambodia’s forests, pushing roughly 60 species, including gibbons, sunbears, leopards, tigers, and elephants, just to name a few, toward extinction in Cambodia alone.
Help spread the message about the illegal wildlife trade and the work of Wildlife Alliance. Together we can save Cambodia’s unique wildlife.
Wildlife Alliance (formerly WildAid) is an international 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., with country programs in Cambodia, Thailand, and Russia. The organization’s mission is to provide direct protection to forests and wildlife that are being threatened by illegal activities. Wildlife Alliance has been working with the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) since 2000 to assist in law enforcement and combating wildlife and timber trafficking.
As part of Wildlife Alliance’s multifaceted approach to addressing both the supply and demand side of wildlife trafficking, we maintain two core projects focused on the rescue, care, and release of wildlife victimized by this black market trade. The Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team (WRRT) is a 12-man team, comprised of military police and Forestry Administration officers, who conduct nation-wide investigations of wildlife trafficking networks, inspect restaurants believed to be selling wildlife products, intercept shipments of wildlife along the borders, and track down the poachers, sellers, and middlemen in the wildlife trafficking business. They work hand in hand with our Care for Rescued Wildlife project which is located at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center (PTWRC), a government-run facility that is home to 1,200 animals, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, all of whom were rescued from the trade. If confiscated wildlife cannot be released immediately, which is our goal, d! ue to injury, illness, or habituation, the WRRT take them to PTWRC where they receive top-notch medical care, nutritious food, and live in natural spacious areas until ready for release, or in some cases, for the rest of their lives. Unlike most wildlife rescue operations in Asia, Wildlife Alliance can guarantee that all rescued animals are provided an appropriate outcome after they are recovered from traders or dealers. This is a unique element of Wildlife Alliance’s work in Asia, and sets our wildlife rescue programs apart.
As a result of our 10 years of hard work, Wildlife Alliance has successfully provided sustainable livelihoods to over 700 families in Koh Kong, delivered our environmental education program to 50,000 students and community members, rescued over 45,000 live animals, and preserved 714,024 hectares (1.76 million acres) of continuous rainforest in a landscape of 880,000 hectares in Cambodia.
