About Shine On Sierra Leone:

The underlying philosophy of Shine On Sierra Leone is about change and not charity. The mission grew from its early focus on education and building schools into creating sustainable businesses and economies that will enable the local communities to support and generate profit themselves. Shine on Sierra Leone has created and runs two comprehensive educational programs, adult and computer literacy programs, a community recreation and basketball center, and a groundbreaking microcredit-lending program.
In 2011, the organization will built its first birth clinic in partnership with Mrs. Sia Koroma, first lady of Sierra Leone.

Sustainable development is truly about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In Sierra Leone, the needs are great but on a bigger scale, it’s crucial that after developing any buildings or projects the local community will gradually be able to support and sustain the project on it’s own. Our efforts are directed toward empowering the people of the region with affordable and efficient resources, methods, and skills.

As of spring 2010, SOSL has completed three sustainable building projects including the Muddy Lotus School (which is also the first sustainable school in Sierra Leone), the Cuttino Mobley Recreation Center and Basketball Court, and two brand new additional classrooms built just this spring for the Muddy Lotus School.

Currently being developed and built; the Adama of Dream’s school inspired by Adama, an expat from Sierra Leone based in Connecticut, who confided in fellow churchgoer Patti Cole that the 150-year-old village she was born in never had a school. Inspired by Adama’s story, Patti discovered Shine on Sierra Leone’s website and raised the $25,000 needed to build the school.

We create educational and cultural exchange program for children in Los Angeles that connects them to our students in Sierra Leone. Theses programs allow children form both country to discover each other's culture, history and open their mind to the world they live in.
We intend to open the bridge between Sierra Leone and the USA from an educational, cultural, and economical stand point.

On 10/10/10 Shine On Sierra Leone hopes to capture the beauty of this country, the breath-taking landscapes, the smiling and happy people, the lovely culture. The public opinion froze an image onto the country ten years ago when the civil war was ravaging both the country and its civilians. We need to re-open the curtains and invite the world to see Sierra Leone from a different light.
