In the spirit of the "bee on a flower" video, my students and I started brainstorming ideas for 60-second documentary videos. What do you think?

kids playing at a playground
making breakfast
picking up trash
catching the bus
taking out the garbage
a walk down Main Street
boat workers docking the ferry
feeding the dog
crossing a busy intersection on foot
dogs running down a beach
picking vegetables
buying something at the convenience store
birds at the bird feeder
mucking a horse stall
getting a coffee
ocean waves on stones
recycling at a dump
skateboarding through town
cigarette break at the supermarket
seagulls at the dump
driving down a bumpy dirt road
running around with your friends at the park
sneaking down a path
chatting with Grandma
church activities
fixing a car or bike
visiting a yard sale
family games
painting a boat

The bee video is great - I showed it to two of my classes and they got the point - it's the videographer not the camera which makes a great film.

Ok - here's a challenge - any great videos out there made on really low-end equipment? (cellphone video, webcams, etc.)

The video of the bee is beautiful. I showed it to my husband, and it reminded him of a video he had seen years ago in which someone had taken a whiteboard and spelled out the word "bee" with some type of scent. Then he videoed it as first one bee came and landed on it, then left, then more came, and finally the bees were spelling the word "BEE". I looked for it online, but could not find it. However, I found something similar from a wine company wanting to raise money for saving the bees. Students could put any number of symbols on a surface, with a scent or clear soda or clear Karo syrup. It's a little weird. What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm-I1IQ0L2U

Hey Chris, we hope that the videos we post can be inspiring. Finding your topic can be challenging. The good news is that there's something in everyone's backyard that is just as interesting as Antarctica. Let us know if we could be be more help here. I think that something one of you students shoots could be just as good as anyone's-- so I want them to know and understand that...

Chris, I have my kids saying the same thing, however i tell them it doesn;t matter. I filmed footage of waking my 20 month old son up in the morning an it was pretty bad as far a excitement and exotic locations. They seem to get more of the idea that way.

That Antarctic video is very exciting (and cool!)

One problem I have when my students view many of the videos or the trailer, however, is this feeling that everyone who is participating on 10.10.10 is a professional videographer in an exotic location, and that the low-quality video they will shoot in their backyard on their low-tech camera will pale in comparison and won't have even a remote chance of being recognized.

Have you all had this problem with your students? Have you found any great inspirational videos to show that were done using cheap equipment in "ordinary" places?

Have you all seen some of the videos that the OneDayonEarth staff have been showcasing to inspire us at http://vimeo.com/channels/onedayonearth ? Some really amazing short films.

My favorite so far is "In The Eye of The Beholder" by Husam Al-Sayed - http://vimeo.com/channels/onedayonearth#14501201 - I showed this to one of my classes and they were intrigued. Beautiful, sad, spooky, and extremely well crafted.

One problem I discovered today is that Vimeo is blocked to all students by MEC which provides internet to most schools in Massachusetts. I need to speak with my technology coordinator to see if something can be done to give students access.

Best-
Chris
