It's a Sunday!

I have an Honors class that is SOOO jazzed about doing this project.  They want to document 24 hours in the life of our school - students, administration, teachers and all staff.  I love their ideas and they have already taken so much ownership of this.  However, it's a Sunday and they can't film our school on a Sunday obviously. Does anyone know if there's an allowance for them to do their filming like the Friday before and just post on 10-10?

Thanks so much for your engagement in One Day on Earth. Official media creation does need to occur on 10.10.10. We understand the limitations this may cause in certain academic environments. Additional participation can take place outside of October 10th, but resulting media cannot be considered for our motion picture film or archive, and should not be submitted as such.

We suggest either assigning the filming/photography as a homework assignment, or planning an arranged field trip (it should be possible to find parental chaperones as it is a weekend day.) We hope that you will still find a way to participate.

It will be interesting to figure out what sorts of video cameras kids might have access to at home on a Sunday...

- webcams
- cellphone videocams
- video mode on their still digital cameras
- old tape-based video cameras

This spring I bought a brand-new video camera at B&H for $24 - a Coby imitation of the Flip - it takes an SD flashcard and runs on AAA batteries. The sound is a little funny, but considering the price...

Nevertheless... the day of the week will be a challenge for many of us in the USA. Because of access issues, I'm thinking of either making it a voluntary project or one of two project options for my kids. (Or maybe assign other duties to those students who can't shoot footage on their own.)

Many parts of the world have school on Sunday - Yemen and Pakistan, for instance. It will be interesting to see and discuss their school days even if we can't shoot ours!

I did get an email back stating that any video to be considered for the movie documentary or the archives MUST be shot on 10-10. Bummer. But, my kids have decided to proceed with their project anyway and then do individual projects tied to ODOE on that day that we will edit together and post. They were disappointed, but decided to run with their idea anyway and I'm supporting them. It will still be a great learning experience, even if we can't have it be part of the project. Actually all cameras have a date coding, so besides the honor system, unless you deliberately change the date on the camera it is quite easy to tell.
