Filmed during a weeklong trip to the cenotes in Tulum, Mexico, diving seven different cenotes, from deep pit cenotes with clouds of hydrogen sulphide, to spectacular cave formations, haloclines and beautiful root structures with aquatic life. This film is about Xibalba, which translates as “place of fear” to the Maya, who believed that the cenotes were gateways to Xibalba, the underworld.

One Day on Earth: Who are you and what is your profession?
Elke: I’m a senior graphic designer and media director, working on a freelance basis through my company In2 Focus Media.
I design, photograph and shoot video for corporate clients. I’m a Director, Member of the Board, at the San Diego UnderSea
Film Exhibition (SDUFEX).

One Day on Earth: Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
Elke: I was born in Cologne, Germany, grew up in Malmö, Sweden, then later moved to London, England and finally ended up
in San Diego, where I’ve lived over 15 years. I grew up traveling the world from an early age, my parents worked for Lufthansa,
so it became a way of life for me.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Elke: The ocean has always been a major attraction to me, so my destinations were always linked to water, and I snorkeled all
the time, until one day in Tahiti, I tried scuba diving for the first time and was hooked. That’s when I discovered my passion for
documenting and filming the underwater world and marine life encounters, which the led to corporate, promotional videography,
an important addition to my graphic design and product photography business.

One Day on Earth: Who or what do you most admire?
Elke: I admire people who are able to support themselves and family, and at the same time living the life of their dreams.

One Day on Earth: What do you have?
Elke: I have a very fortunate life, I have a beautiful daughter, we’re experiencing the world both over- and underwater together,
appreciating different cultures, understanding and accepting diversity and opinions.

One Day on Earth: What do you need?
Elke: I need to focus more on sharing some of my experiences, my insight and my vision through different channels...
filmmaking is the perfect tool to reach and teach people, about Ocean and Marine Life Conservation. Need to get out and shoot
more.

One Day on Earth: How was your 12.12.12?
Elke: My 12.12.12 was not as I had planned, due to diving and weather conditions. I wanted to film underwater locally in our
kelp forest, but ended up at my favorite restaurant on the bay, shooting a time lapse of the overcast sunset.

One Day on Earth: What projects are you working on now?
Elke: I recently returned from a dive trip to the Komodo Islands in Indonesia, with a plethora of underwater footage, which I’m
currently working on. It will be a five minute film, with Komodo Dragons, pristine coral reefs and billions of fish. Still working on
the script.

One Day on Earth: Any advice for filmmakers who aspire to film your type of material?
Elke: I would advise underwater filmmakers to try to shoot selectively and to develop a storyline, maybe adding narration.
Keeping the video short and focused. Not always as easy as it sounds, within an unpredictable marine environment. Be safe
and have fun!
Profile Spotlight: Martin Dohrntag:onedayonearth.ning.com,2012-12-07:4358628:BlogPost:4535312012-12-07T21:30:00.000ZProfile Spotlightshttps://onedayonearth.ning.com/profile/ProfileSpotlights

We are often asked this question: 'Why use a Starlight, infra red or thermal camera, why not just use a regular camera and lights?' ... At night, visible light is a powerful thing, and its presence completely alters the behaviour of many creatures – in particular, predators. Filming nocturnal predators with visible light at night is pointless if you are trying to film what they actually do. Any visible light will alter the prey they select, alter how the prey escapes (or not) and the method the predators use to get it. Visible light will also alter the relationship between all the animals present, prey or predator, sometimes causing fights, at other times causing panic. Using visible light and daylight cameras also means you have a very restricted range. A 2 kilowatt light is unlikely to go much more than 50m."

One Day on Earth: Who are you and what is your profession?
Martin: I am Martin Dohrn and I am a natural history filmmaker.

One Day on Earth: Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
Martin: I was born in New Zealand, and studied to be a documentary photographer before realising that my true interest lay in the natural world.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Martin: It's hard to find a precise reason why I became a filmmaker. K.N. Singh at Guildford College of Art was the first person to put a movie camera in my hand. The work of
Oxford Scientific Films in the seventies and eighties, the BBC series 'The World About Us', David Attenborough's 'Zoo Quest' and of course, Life on Earth.

One Day on Earth: Who or what do you most admire?
Martin: David Attenborough is a great inspiration, along with other filmmakers, such as Hugh Miles, Alan Root, as well as late 19th century explorers and naturalists, such as Alfred Russell Wallace.

One Day on Earth: What do you have?
Martin: Far too many cameras who's obsolescence is always approaching at an ever increasing rate - and a production company dedicated to seeing the natural world in new ways.

One Day on Earth: What do you need?
Martin: Money to keep developing new ideas.

One Day on Earth: What are you planning on filming for 12.12.12?
Martin: Flocking starlings as they come in to roost in a reed bed. Since a lot of our work is focussed on night and the boundary between night and day, the starlings give us an opportunity to try some new things - in case we discover something different - and bring some fresh images to one of the most spectacular wildlife spectacles anywhere in the world (if the starlings behave themselves).
Profile Spotlight: Agus Makkietag:onedayonearth.ning.com,2012-12-05:4358628:BlogPost:4472772012-12-05T03:30:00.000ZProfile Spotlightshttps://onedayonearth.ning.com/profile/ProfileSpotlights

François: I am François Grumelin-Sohn aka Kadavre Exquis. I received a graphic design education, before moving to animation & moving image. I am also composing music.

One Day on Earth: Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
François: I always drew and I decided my life would be based on that. In graphic design, I learnt a lot about the image, but I figured out I was more inspired when it was moving so I moved on to animation even if I still continue to practice graphic design and drawing.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
François: The fact that it was the medium using everything I was truly in love with, image, music, story. It is a unique combination which can be rarely found in other department of art.

Danilo: My name is Danilo Parra and my profession is the constant search to be professional which I hope never ends and only gets me closer. That profession has lately been documentary filmmaking and some short form narrative pieces as well. My other profession I am farther from and also keeps me excited: making music. One Day on Earth: Who are you and what is your profession?
Mirra: I'm a filmmaker. My job (as half of The Perennial Plate duo) is to travel the world making documentary shorts about local/sustainable food - or rather the amazing people who are producing it. Oh, and I'm a vegetarian and Daniel is not - which makes things interesting when filming documentaries about real food.
Daniel: I'm a chef and a filmmaker. Or I was a chef, and now I make short documentaries about sustainable food around the globe, cooking along the way.

One Day on Earth: Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
Mirra: I grew up in Minneapolis and graduated college with a degree in Psychology. Then I moved to New York to study dance, then waitress, followed by a few years in advertising, a stint as a dog walker, and finally a year or so as cheese monger. Obviously, when that was all done, the natural next step was to become a filmmaker.
Daniel: I was brought up mostly in England. My parents were big travelers, so I was raised with visits to India and Morocco and Vietnam. They wanted us to be anything but "normal." So, I supposed, traveling the world making movies is just what they hoped I would do. After University I started making movies and cooking at the same time. I'd finish cooking and go home to edit. It was tiring. So I combined these passions into one project.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Mirra: I love hearing people's stories, and this job provides incredible access to those people and those stories from around the world. But truthfully, before Daniel handed me a camera and asked me to film him butchering a lamb back in 2010, I would not have been able to tell you that this is what I would be doing, or how life would have turned out.
Daniel: I would say I like to be creative and encourage positive dialogue. So it's not as much about the filmmaking and more about getting to create art and make connections between people that might not have the chance to meet in real life.

One Day on Earth: Who or what do you most admire?
Mirra: Kindness.
Daniel: I'm a big fan of the classics: Gandhi, MLK Jr, Oscar Romero.

One Day on Earth: What do you have?
Mirra: Two backpacks, a couple cameras, a passport and tickets to Japan, China, India, Sri Lanka, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Turkey, South Africa, Ethiopia, Argentina and Mexico.
Daniel: I have an amazing job.

One Day on Earth: What do you need?
Mirra: Probably better health insurance.
Daniel: For it to never end.

One Day on Earth: Who are you and what is your profession?
Rafa: I am first of all a great lover of the sea, especially of the life that is hidden beneath the surface. I was born in an oceanic archipelago, the Canary Islands, and that always has struck me. I need the sea as much as the air I breathe.
I have been a professional diver for many years, photographer and now underwater camera. My profession has always been the excuse to feel the sea nearby.

One Day on Earth: Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
Rafa: My career has been to turn my passion into a way of life. My training is that of an autodidact, correcting my mistakes, evolving and to be my own biggest critic. I founded Aquawork in 1994, the company I direct and from which I work in projects of underwater filming and nature.

One Day on Earth: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Rafa: What really inspires me is being an underwater cameraman, being under the sea. Being a filmmaker is just a way to show what I see and feel.

One Day on Earth: Who or what do you most admire?
Rafa: I admire people who have a big passion for what they do and also have sufficient sensitivity and professionalism to carry it out.
INTERVIEW:

Who are you and what is your profession?

I'm a filmmaker, musician and composer. I also founded and curate the Global Oneness Project - a webby award winning web magazine and media platform. I live in Point Reyes Station with my wife and two children.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I grew up in London and moved to Northern California as a teenager where I learned to surf and developed a love for foraging for mushrooms. At 14 I was bitten by the jazz bug and spent the next 10+ years playing, touring and recording with some of the biggest names in jazz. In 2005 I had an opportunity to work in film and haven't looked back since.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

The visual medium is such a powerful one. Story, imagery, music all coming together to create an experience that you can share with others. Once I saw the power of cinema to bring stories and ideas to life I was hooked.

Who or what do you most admire?

People who take their time to create, capture and share beauty - whatever form that takes. In our fast-paced world we need more beauty that can capture our imagination and inspire us.

What do you have?

Imagination, a few good friends, and a willingness to make mistakes and improvise.

What do you need?

The world to slow down, more time to surf and a computer virus that will eradicate email from the face of the earth.

What are you planning on filming for 12.12.12?

Follow a surfer(s) on a search for waves along the rugged northern California coast. Through this simple surfers ritual we'll explore the love of the ocean, nature and the regenerative role it can play in our lives.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
I grew up in Colorado, USA and have lived here most of my life. When I was young my parents moved out of the ‘burbs and built their own solar home up in the foothills. It was kind of a small farm with goats, chickens, rabbits, pigs, and two ducks. It’s given me lots of strange stories from childhood to bore people with now. I studied English and history in college, which has been entirely useful in my career of filling up my bookshelf.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
There was this Italian film “Cinema Paradiso” I saw back in the late 1980’s that was just enchanting. Perhaps because it was about a film director and the magic of movies, but that film always roused my desire to create my own films. Other films over the years have of course inspired me, but particularly the films of Jean Pierre Jeunet and Krzystof Kieslowski.

A number of documentaries have shown me the potency of film as a medium to reveal important issues. I see these films and I think “I could do that. I know a couple of stories that need to be told; a few people that need a voice.”
The technological advances of digital video and computer-based editing have also allowed me to pursue this insanity. It is amazing what can be created with a simple camera and computer. Ok... so not to kiss up to Vimeo, but recently I’ve been astonished and humbled by what “real” filmmakers are loading up to the site. Beautiful films!

Who or what do you most admire?
Do we admire those who resemble us or those who are different? I suppose I admire those people with qualities that I would like to strengthen within myself. I look up to those people who have listened to their inner passion and sought out a directed purpose to their lives, and to those that have risked everything for a cause larger than themselves. Obviously, Mohandas Gandhi, Mother Theresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. are on the list, but also people today like the Sea Shepherd crew, the gregarious Steve Irwin, Michael Fay (Explorer in Residence at National Geographic who walked across the jungles of Gabon and instigated the creation of 13 national parks in the country), the visionary Steve Jobs of Apple, and many other artists, musicians, and writers.

I am also constantly awed by nature. The rocks, plants, trees and all the animals scurrying around on the Earth are so interesting and complex. Weather, especially when I’m stuck out in it, always impresses me. The speed and force of an approaching storm is something to admire even if it is pounding me senseless. And after, the sun breaks through and the receding clouds are often spectacular. I’m fortunate to live where I can step out the door and experience the power and fragile beauty of the natural world every day.

What did you film on 10.10.10?
I decided to film something about trees. I started the day out filming the sun rising behind some trees near my house. A tree I had planted in my yard a few years ago had grown too large for the area, so my wife Heather and I filmed the process of moving that tree to a new location. After that, we interviewed some people who lost their home to a forest fire. The idea was to make a longer film combining a few more segments about trees, but the other bits didn’t turn out so well. I found that the three short films didn’t really go together as a single story, but worked okay as individual pieces.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?
Since that’s Veterans/Armistice Day, I thought I might do something about that. I’m not a veteran, but I know a few of them, and I might interview them and their experiences of war and being in the military. I’m probably the exact opposite of a soldier so it should be an interesting challenge. I’m sure a lot of people will be filming something about Veterans’ Day too, so I hope it’s not too cliché of a subject. I think I might do another time-lapse as well. I found this great jumble of boulders and rock spires that could look amazing at sunrise, particularly if there’s fresh snow.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

From an early age I spend a lot of time in nature. Studying all kinds of wildlife. I also did some photography but couldn't afford a decent telelens. I studied environmental management with nature conservation as specialty. When my sons were younger I picked up a nice video camera (8 years ago). I started making some wildlife video's but couldn't get the results I hoped for. I did like the combination of movement and sound. It captured far more of the experience than photos. When HD video came I bought a new camera and was very pleased with the results although it wasn't much of a telelens for birds and macro wasn't that great. Last year I bought a Canon 550d (T2i) and finally could capture wildlife in a quality close to photo quality.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I now can capture nature and wildlife as I experience it. Invite people to the world I love so much. I like to inspire people to go outside and enjoy nature. It doesn't have to be rare or special just the basic birds around the house give you so much to enjoy. I also like to show other people enjoying nature. Normal people like your neighbor or friend. See how they spend and enjoy their free time and why don't you? There are a lot more things that makes video making interesting. When making a movie I feel like I have to push all my skills to the limit and beyond. There are so many aspects you have to do at once. It is always so challenging. You have to get all the shots, mood and sound at a certain moment and know you have a story worth telling and continuity between shots to tell it like you want to.

Who or what do you most admire?

I admire the DSLR video making community where so many enthusiastic people share their knowledge and work on the internet. There is so much collective innovation and creativity you feel inspired by everyone. There is a huge amount of information available. If you have an issue with something? Just look it up or asked for it on the many forums and people help you out. I learn every day.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I went to a bird hide near my house. Bird photographers and nature lovers come here especially during this time because of the migratory birds. I knew I could rely on enough wildlife and people to tell their story. The weather forecasts were promising. My first thought was to portrait the photographers. How they are passionate about their hobby. Spend their hours waiting for the right moment. The moments of joy and disappointment. Beside that I wanted to show other visitors and their motivations. I hoped to interview women to show some difference in how they enjoy nature. When the older women started talking about her friend that died it felt so intimate and I had to fit this somehow into the whole story. After I finished the first concept I explicitly asked her if she agreed with the content. Otherwise I would have left it out. After I published the movie on 'one day on earth' she showed it to the family of her girlfriend and they were very pleased with this movie. As it brought back so many nice memories of her. Just how they remembered her.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I haven't thought about it. I intend to finish a couple of projects before that. The first thing that comes in mind are colorful mushrooms, and autumn leaves. Maybe covering an excursion from the local nature organization. I hope with a lot of kids. That would be great. Another great time to complete something worth watching.

Who are you and what is your profession?

I work as a producer at two different companies; Swedish Web Editors and Preamp. We produce corporate films and documentaries.

During my 37 years of walking on our beautiful earth I've lived in Sweden. I was born in the small village of Simrishamn in the Southern part of Sweden, I grew up in the sleep town of Vellinge and since 1996 I live in Sweden's third largest city, Malmö.

Since 1992 I've run my own company with in IT, but my goal has always been to work within film and theater. In 1994 I decided to attend an acting school, but realized soon that I enjoyed everything around a production more then acting. So I decided to find my way into film and theater in a different way. In 1996 I studied to become a digital animator, but after one year I realized that the 3D-industry in Sweden was to small and I enjoyed everything around the production more then animating. So I continued to find the right way for me to work within film and theater. In 2007 I started my film company Preamp and quickly realized that this was the right way for me to work within the film industry, by just doing it!

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

At my 10th birthday I got my first computer - a Spectrum ZX81. At the age of thirteen I joined the computer club in my hometown and soon I became one of the youngest computer science teachers in Sweden. To this day I still teach and lecture, but these days the topic is film production.

As a boy I had a hard time sitting still and therefor I had many hobbies. Of course the computers, but also horseback riding, karate, theater acting, singing in choir and filming with my dads super 8. I had a big interest in finding out how stuff worked, resulting in many broken toys and electric appliances. When my own toys where investigated I continued with my kid brothers and then with my dads tools. I still explore the inner parts of cameras, computers and other gadgets. They rarely works afterwards.

I grew up with my two brothers and my parents. In school I had trouble sitting still in class and sadly I didn't really attend school from the age of fifteen and up. Today I know that what I needed was a different way of learning then the traditional way. Some brains work in different ways. These days I have great benefit of having a brain that works in a different way.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

My grandfather Stig was a stills photographer and worked as a war correspondent in Sweden/Denmark during the second world war. Both before and after the war he was as a news correspondent and a photographer for the Swedish Royal family. Our house was filled with boxes containing pictures taken by him. Pictures of hanged nazi soldiers in the docks of Copenhagen, victims of the holocaust arriving to swedish harbors, the Swedish King proudly presenting a shoot duck and so on.

His pictures has inspired me to tell a stories with out using words.

My grandmother Gullan, whom I never meet, passed away in her fifties. She has always been a bit of mystic woman for me, only described by parents and through photos. A small, but very strong woman with sweet, yet intensive brown eyes. The unknown around her has inspired me to find out more about people around me, but I always leave something to the unknown.

Both my grandfather Stig and my grandmother Gullan where variety artist in a young age and continued with singing and dancing though-out their life's. I guess the stories and pictures from their life inspired me to attend acting school in 1994.

My grandfather Karl-Erik had different types of nine-five jobs through out his life. During the second world war he was stationed around Sweden practically all the war. Just waiting for the germans and the russians to come. Six years of waiting and gladly nobody came.

My grandfather Karl-Erik may have live a quiet and still life, but he was a master of telling stories. He told the stories straight forward, just as they happened. The stories may have been simple, but the way he told them made them unique and very interesting. I will remember his stories as long as I live. His way of telling a story from something simple is one of my big inspirations.

My grandmother Anna-Lisa was a classic housewife grandmother, who poured her love over us all the time. Her way of giving unconditional love is not only an inspiration, its also the way I try to live my life.

Who or what do you most admire?

People who tell the truth and who has a good heart. I've always admired all my grandparents, but also my parents for their good heart and honest way of living.

Two people whom I never meet, but admire never the less are my great grandfather and great grandmother. They both achieved very much during their life. My great grandfather was blind, but managed to be a well respected opera singer and a theater play director. My great grandmother was a scriptwriter and also Swedens first female film director (second in the world).

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I filmed my grandfather Karl-Erik during an every day morning coffee. We talked about his life and about his wife, my grandmother. This was my first own project, meaning I didn't have any of my co-workers to help me. I did everything by myself, nearly... I couldn't have done it without grandfather Karl-Erik. A couple of months later he passed away. All the way to the end he kept asking me if I heard something from the americans about our little film. He enjoyed the result very much. He became 94 yrs old.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I'll probably film something thats close to my heart, but I am not really sure what to film...yet. One thing is for sure, I'll visit my grandfathers grave and have a coffee with him.
Profile Spotlight: Carol Francis-Rineharttag:onedayonearth.ning.com,2011-09-12:4358628:BlogPost:1709002011-09-12T19:30:00.000ZProfile Spotlightshttps://onedayonearth.ning.com/profile/ProfileSpotlights

Carol’s work with the Sudanese “Lost Boys” began with their arrival in 2001. She is recognized nationwide for her activism and consulting on behalf of the Sudan. She and “Lost Boy” Isaac Khor Bher went to South Sudan months after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement to reunite Isaac with his mother after over 20 years of being separated from war. In 2006, along with Isaac Khor Bher, she founded Project Education Sudan (PES) to support the creation of an educational infrastructure in rural South Sudan. PES has reunited 7 more “Lost Boys” with their families from 2006-2008 where PES is building schools. She is currently the Executive Director. Carol was a 2008 Delegate to the United Nations Commission of the Status of Women, and has a particular interest on equal education for girls. Carol leads annual monitoring and working trips to South Sudan to promote the work of PES. www.projecteducationsudan.org Go to www.onedayonearth.org/group/pes

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I grew up in the Air Force, moving to an new state or country every 3-4 years. I lived in Puerto Rico during the Cuban Missile Crisis, when I first became aware of the possibility of nuclear warfare. I was a shy introverted child which gave me the opportunity to be more of an observer of life. Growing up in the sixties thrust me into the social change fervor of the times. I became active in civil rights, resisting the war in Vietnam and the women’s movement. I have traveled extensively, am a former Secondary teacher and have worked in refugee resettlement in the U.S. for over 25 years. I have been married to my husband Richard for 37 years, have two adult children and am a grandmother of two boys.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I am not a film maker, I am a boiler of creative ideas! I minored in film studies in college and have a design background. I am not a professional. I have participated as a producer with professional documentary Director, Craig Volk on One Story: Isaac Khor Bher, and with professional international journalist, Tamara Banks with the One Day on Earth 10.10.10 project Referendum: Diaspora Perspective. I have written scripts and film for Project Education Sudan when I return each year to the villages in Jonglei State, South Sudan where PES helps communities build schools. I film or photograph more out of a desire to capture the soul of a subject or landscape. Working in Sudan brought the opportunity to me. The subject matter of South Sudan has penetrated my heart living, working and being with the rural people and experiencing such a spirit of joy in spite of the suffering. I like to capture hope through conversation or visually by photographing “the day in the life of” which is what inspired me to accept the invitation from One Day on Earth. Tamara Banks, the videographer who filmed the project, also works in South Sudan so I knew I wanted to partner with her to film the interviews of the Sudanese Diaspora in Denver. She has the same love for the subject as I do. She returned with me this past Feb-March 2011 to film a documentary on South Sudan building a new nation. Project Education Sudan was chosen as an organization working on helping build schools in the most rural and impoverished war torn areas of the country.

Who or what do you most admire?

I have a deep admiration for the people of South Sudan who have endured over 125 years of oppression. They have learned to hold onto life and be grateful for each day. It is humbling. The Sudanese women are my heroes; they teach me daily how to give, forgive, have faith and hope.

I also admire my husband, Richard who shares my vision and puts up with a 61 year young woman who leaves for two months a year to one of the most dangerous places on earth. He often does not hear from me for days or a week due to lack of cell or internet.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

We were not able to secure a film maker in South Sudan in 2010, so we decided to focus on the recent referendum and capture the voices of a cross section of South Sudanese in the Diaspora living in Denver, Colorado. Project Education Sudan’s Referendum: Diaspora Perspective captures the voices and stories of Denver Diaspora Sudanese Nibol Achuil, Mary Reng, Sarah Achyo and Mama Kot Bior - Bor Women’s Association of Colorado; Daniel Majok Gai - Project Education Sudan; Agana Zephenia - L.I.O.N.S. Graduate; Gideon Abraham - SPLA Secretariat, Colorado; Carol Francis-Rinehart - Director, Project Education Sudan and “Lost Boy” Ngor Gai Abiar as they share their hopes and perspectives on the upcoming January Referendum and journey from oppression and war to freedom.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

We will film this year in South Sudan. It will focus on capturing the daily life in the rural area of Jonglei State, South Sudan: its chiefs, elders, children, and women around the theme of the newest nation in the world (July 9, 2011) The Republic of South Sudan. We will film one of the only all girls school (700 girls!) in the area where only 1% of girls attend primary and less than 1% graduate from secondary, interview elected local and government officials, teachers, women, children, and the Dinka cattle camp culture. Daniel Majok Gai and I will do the filming.
Profile Spotlight: Christian Plähntag:onedayonearth.ning.com,2011-09-05:4358628:BlogPost:1696432011-09-05T19:00:00.000ZProfile Spotlightshttps://onedayonearth.ning.com/profile/ProfileSpotlights

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I grew up in a little village in northern Germany. After school I got trained to be a paramedic in the near city, which was a great and really moving experience. After this I decided to do something creative, and started studying industrial design, communication design and audiovisual communication, in Germany and Spain. Over the last years I worked creating video projection installations, live visuals and motion graphics as well as realizing film projects.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I used to be a bit into photography in my childhood. I think the photos I made were really crappy, but I remember the strong fascination about that blurry and black spot on a blue ground which I knew it was that hawk in the sky. Many of these early photos were kind of abstract, because I simply didn’t know how to use the gear, but they all had a story to tell, and I was proud to catch these little stories.

Later on I started to paint and draw a lot, as well combining photography with it, on the search of a good way to concentrate and to retell certain moments experiences. I was searching a different way of expression, but somehow I never felt any need to work with video. Nobody I knew had access to it, and somehow I also felt uncomfortable with the medium, maybe because back then it was something very technical and expensive and I could whether afford it nor understand how it works.

It happened on a flea market, that I found this 20 year old Super 8 camera in my hands. It was no decision to buy it, it was clear that this was the "new" medium to work with. A simple but strong thought: images that move! I got the films, the glue, old projectors, and made a lot of sequences, time and filter experiments and animations, to use this for visuals and projection installations with music.

But I wouldn’t say that this is how I became a filmmaker. It was more about the fascination of working with film than ever thinking of finishing a film. One of the best things I had back then was that broken projector, which used to burn films while showing them, it was incredibly beautiful, and I loved it, though as a filmmaker it should have been my worst nightmare.

I started to finish films while studying in university, as well as keeping and showing them instead of burning :) Apart from that I still kept filming without making, I started to capture everyday life in tiny fragments, like living photography. It was like the thing with the hawk, but filming was a much better way for me to catch moments, in sense of retelling reality. I love photography, but for what I wanted to do, I needed sequences. A good photo is like a monument, something that can become iconic, a good film sequence is closer to reality and memories.

Over the years I kept catching those reality fragments while I earned my money creating visual content and video installations. From 2008 on I decided to pause work in Berlin and went to Barcelona for the winter to start a documentary film project made of fragments of everyday life situations in my neighbourhood, the Raval. This turned out to be my first long film after university and brought me on the way to realize more film projects.

Aside of this I’m still trying to catch moments and fragments of day life, with the same feeling I had when I was a kid doing crappy photos. And if I find a way to transmit all of this digital footage back to a good old film roll one day, I’ll maybe burn beautiful holes in it :)

Who or what do you most admire?

I admire everybody who manages to live and fulfill his or her "vision" and while that staying a peaceful, respectful and tolerant person. No matter if its about realising art projects or managing to grow a family, I admire people who do what they want with passion.

By the way, and don’t blame me for that as a stupid football fan, I also admire Lionel Messi! :)

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I captured some fragments of everyday life in the very neighbourhood where I live, in Berlin Friedrichshain. Nothing special, nothing spectacular, just the typical moments I see on a sunday noon around here.

The 10.10.10 was a really nice day, so everybody went out to catch some sun and to walk around the flea markets, which are a bit part of the sunday culture here. Later on people went to the bridge nearby, to watch the sun go down, that’s it.

Aesthetically, that time I was trying to get some of the Super 8 film feeling back by using an old and cheap c mount serurity camera lens. It has a terrible quality if you judge technically, but for me it gives back some of the poetic of feeling old film on a very direct way. I believe that the quality and poetry of an image doesn’t come from the technical perfection. Sometimes it comes from the lack of it.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I’m not sure where I’m going to be on this very day yet, apart from the fact that a friend of mine finally might celebrate his birthday this year again! I could probably tell you what I’m planning to film in 2014, where are you heading with the concept then? :) Thank you very much for giving me the chance to show you some tiny bits of the day life fragments work, and keep on doing those wonderful projects connecting people all over the world!

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I grew up in a rural area with parents who didn't have much education. There weren't a lot of activities for kids, but for some reason I was a good student and loved reading. During my last couple of years at my small high school, we had a teacher who was willing to make the effort to put on plays. Even though I had never done anything creative, I found that I was drawn to every aspect of theater—the sets, the lighting, the acting.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

Believe it or not, one of my first inspirations was The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. As a high school kid in the 1970's, I had limited access to popular culture beyond the three or four broadcast TV channels. But I was struck by how much fun the entertainers on Johnny Carson always seemed to be having.

Until I got to college, I didn't have a clue about how movies got made or how TV shows got on the air. But my freshman year at Indiana University happened to coincide with the making of a Hollywood film called Breaking Away, right there on the campus. I went down to the old stadium to be in the crowd scene for the big bike race at the end. I loved getting to see a movie being made. I'm in the stadium crowd if you know where to look!

Also I had a friend who worked at the university's TV station. He had his own audio recording equipment and knew all kinds of things about sound and images. After he got a job as news photographer, I started riding around in the news car with him, carrying gear and doing anything I could to be useful. He and I got the idea of making a film as a project for a class. This class was offered in the English department and wasn't really about production at all. Even though personal video equipment was unheard of in those days, we thought we could just barely get away with borrowing video gear from my friend's various workplaces. So we helped ourselves to gear wherever we could find it. It's a good thing we didn't break anything; we'd have been in a lot of trouble!

Who or what do you most admire?

I'm really drawn to anybody that can teach me something. I'm always thrilled to meet a scientist, or an explorer of some sort. I especially love people who do amazing things in relative obscurity. For instance, my favorite astronaut is John Young. He went into space six times, walked on the moon, and flew the space shuttle on its first mission. Yet I bet not one in a hundred people has ever heard of him. Same thing with James Jamerson, who played bass on just about every Motown hit of the sixties and seventies.

I'm a big fan of many of the bloggers, podcasters and authors who are working to inform people about pseudoscience, superstition, and other silliness. And I admire my wife tremendously. She's performed the thankless task of serving on our local school board for the last three years. Now that's brave!

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I reasoned that my best chance of getting something into the finished movie was to shoot one great brief shot. So I looked for something that was at hand, and yet something not everyone has seen. Our local art museum has an area of very interesting outdoor art installations, including a sort of basketball court with vivid blue and red tubes that form arches like the path that a ball might make bouncing around. I put a fisheye lens on my Red One camera, and had my eleven-year-old son pedal his unicycle through the frame. I shot right into the sun, so there are flares everywhere. There's no story–it's just sort of a crazy dream.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I've thought about shooting something related to farming, since there's a lot of that around here. There is also the possibility of filming some wildlife. And there are some terrific mountain scenes in Kentucky where my family is from.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I grew up on Long Island, New York and have three sisters. Two are older, one is younger. I have always been a weird kid playing with sticks and bugs in the backyard. My first art medium was dirt and my first friend was a rock named Charlie.

I later moved to New York City and studied Computer Art at the School of Visual Arts. I have lived and worked here in the city since graduating in 2009.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I personally do not call myself a filmaker. Similarly I do not call myself a photographer or a singer while I do a lot of each of these. That being said the whole notion of capturing moments which you can play back later never seems to loose its novelty on me. Growing up and constantly drawing images took me first to animation. I would use pads of "post-it-notes" to make flipbooks. I loved creating images and am still amazed at what a different experience you can create with just a little bit of motion.

Who or what do you most admire?

My grandma Louisa Muscerella. She art directed much of my early view of the world. She being a talented artist herself pushed me with my drawing at a young age. She taught me never to feel sorry for myself and I see many of my "beter" qualities referenced from watching her as a child.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I took a very laid back approach to 10.10.10. At first I spent a while thinking and stressing over all of the great places other people will film and the great social happenings they would capture. Then in a taxi cab on the way to some strange party in Brooklyn rite before midnight I suddenly felt completely liberated. I realized how amazing it is that I need only capture that which is going on around me. That day I grabbed my camera, hopped on my kick scooter and pressed record.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I imagine I will approach this day in a similar fashion. Head down to the street and let the camera take me where it wants to go. I am prone to wanting to film wildlife and I may even get up the courage to ask the very old bag lady on my street if I can follow her around a bit.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I was born February 7th, 1979 and was raised in Southern California in the city of Mission Viejo. I went to college at San Diego State University. I had a nurturing upbringing in the suburbs and was encouraged to go after whatever made me happy. I kept myself occupied with comic books, skateboarding, Star Wars, and music.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

Skateboarding videos and action movies. A friend of mine in elementary school was a child actor and had a video camera as well as an active imagination. We would act out action scenes from whatever action film that was popular at the time. Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Willis, Van Damme... those guys were gods! Then in middle school I got really into skateboarding and skate videos became my gospel. After school, my friends and I would videotape each other's skating and I started to make my own skate videos with the classic 2 VCR setup. This led into high school video production classes and then into being a film major in college. I guess it's kinda something I've always done.

Who or what do you most admire?

Creative people. I admire anyone that is producing something, whatever that may be. Too many people sit back, point fingers, and complain about stuff but never really do anything about it or try to actually create any sort of change, even if its just for themselves. So I tend to admire anyone willing to step outside the box and try something new, regardless of whether it works or not. It takes courage to think and do anything like that so my hat goes off to you.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I had this epic plan to make a full skate part with some time lapses on that day with my friend Willie Witte. I ran into some technical problems (naturally) like trying to figure out the exposure for the sunrise, the batteries not being fully charged, running out of tapes, I almost missed the sunset... the list goes on. The day before I skated too hard so my legs were really sore and my skating wasn't working out too well. By night time I was super tired and just over the whole project in general. I got a last minute burst of adrenaline at about 9pm that night and painted the 'One Day On Earth' logo on the deck that I had skated earlier that day. I finished the painting by midnight with only 2 or 3 minutes to spare. Once I started to edit the piece, it became quickly apparent that I had a lot more slams than I did landed tricks so that became the focus of the video. My friend Ray Ricafort had just produced a song as a tribute to his dog Benny that had just passed away and that's the song that's in the video. So in an abstract way I did end up making a skate part with some time lapses after all.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I have this epic plan to make a full skate part with some time lapses... :)

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I was born in the US but have been living in countries all over the world since I was a year old. I graduated from high school in Karachi, Pakistan and went to the University of California where I studied Classical and Buddhist philosophy.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

My father always toted an 8mm camera on our travels and this is where I developed my love for film. I started making films when I got my first video camera in 1990. I love documentary film, and simply enjoy capturing life as it is lived in the countries I visit.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

On 10.10.10 I filmed a train-station market here in Burma. Also, I filmed the Shwedagon Pagoda during a rainstorm, and the circle train that serves as an important mode of transportation for many of the Burmese poor here in Yangon.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

On 11.11.11 I will still be here in Burma and plan to film another of the many, many wonderful aspects of this culture and country.

I studied Cinema in FAAP - São Paulo. I've been directing and producing institucional and promotional films.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

Because I've always been in love with emotions.

Who or what do you most admire?

I admire urban sights. Directors and schools with documentary works, like the brazilian João batista de Andrade, director of O Homem Que Virou Suco, 1979.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

It was my birthday :) So I went by the streets shooting everyday scenes, like I usually do to my website.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

As I wrote above my background is far from my hobby. I learned and still learning video techniques from magazines and some books. I learned the most from my mistakes. Making video on expensive 8mm many years ago was the best school for me. I had to pay a lot of money for each failure so I was forced to learn to prevent failures.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I was "forced" by my wife and my mother when our son was born in 1977. They both asked me to buy video camera and start to document his life on video. So I did and I found a lot of fun with this activity. I started with 8mm Eumig (the Austrian brand) video camera. As people around me enjoyed my works I switched from still camera to video. Anyway, I like my Nikon as well.

Who or what do you most admire?

I admire my mother who is bedridden person but in spite if this fact she is very optimistic and she is spreading her optimism around. I admire my wife for her patience with me and my hobby. I admire people. I admire Paris, I admire Jean-Luc Godard films. And I admire the idea of One Day on Earth.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I filmed one day in the rest home in Trinec, Czech Republic where my beloved mom is living. It was just the day The Week of Social Care in Trinec ended.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

The date is the Polish national holiday (the Polish Independence Day) so I will probably film some celebrations. I am living very close to Polish boundary, I am Polish living in the Czech Republic, This is my first idea but maybe I will look for something that would express six magic "1".

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I have a master degree in Political sciences, as well as a degree in Journalism. I have worked for 5 years for a national newspaper in Switzerland. Then, I worked for several years in the Internet Business as a Content manager and as a multimedia journalist (video-audio-writing). As a TV-journalist, I specialized in making portraits of important people in the political or the development scene. I wrote a book with the former ICRC general director about development issues, it was published in 2009. I lived in Africa (Senegal) for one year in 2010, where I worked for UNDP and a global program on climate change adaptation in communities. I made some films in Senegal about begging children and sanitary problems.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I am convinced that the image can bring a message that cannot be transmitted only by writing stories or recording sounds. My favorite moment when making a film is the time during which I am observing what happens around me, how people are moving, communicating. It is important for me to "listen to the image" before filming.

Who or what do you most admire?

I admire life and everywhere where life is going, with humans, animals, nature. I admire everyone who is able to listen to the others and tries to understand them.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I filmed a fisherman preparing and selling fish in one of the poorest market of Dakar.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

As a small child, 30 years ago, I was fascinated by the two cameras of my father, a Super 8 camera and the SLR. He even let me try both of them out. 6 years ago, I bought my first SD camcorder and since 3 years I am filming in HD. In addition to that, I have been trying with my DSLR for 2 years to make good photos. Unfortunately my photographic education is missing.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

Filmmaker is big word. I'm not a filmmaker. At first I mainly wanted to capture my trips on film. Apart from that, I believe that filming and photographing also giving me a great opportunity to regularly go out into nature.

Who or what do you most admire?

I admire the two German wildlife filmmakers Ernst Arendt and Hans Schweiger ( http://www.tierevorderkamera.de ), since 1977 they are producing very good films about wildlife.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I had filmed the cranes resting on the German Baltic Sea.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

is not yet clear, but certainly something about our beautiful nature.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

My first camera was a 35mm. I used that camera mostly to take scenic images of nature in and around the Pacific Northwest where I was raised and lived. I think of those early images as my foundation for a greater appreciation of nature, not only for its beauty but how much it's constantly changing. It wasn't until I started diving over ten years ago that I took more interest in underwater cinematography and trying to capture life in the oceans.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

To tell a good story. That has always been my inspiration. A filmmaker has to draw from everything he has to communicate and keep an audience. Especially today with the internet and instant forms of communication. There is so much material and distractions out there. To tell a good story--it's the greatest challenge there is.

Who or what do you most admire?

I really don't have any one person that I admire. I do admire anyone with passion. If you don't have passion, no one is going to watch or support your project. One of my biggest influences is Stan Waterman--a pioneer in underwater cinematography. I feel he paved the way for what I do today.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

For 10.10.10 I chose to film people and places where I live that the usual tourist doesn't see. There was also a change in the government that day, so I wanted to put some of those images into the project.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

For the next project I'm hoping to capture more variety. Underwater. On land. People. Nature. Life. There is so much to film from the behavior of animals, to weather, to people. I see it as an opportunity to creatively incorporate new techniques and challenge myself and my equipment for one day to produce something that is unique and rarely seen.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?
I was born in Switzerland and have been living in Jamaica for most of my life. I was always the artist in the family, drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I became fascinated with the idea of moving images and breathing life into characters I could create while telling a story, so I focused on doing animation.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Everyone watches movies…There’s a sort of magic to filmmaking. I loved to write short stories when I was little and it was appealing to think that there was this possibility to tell those stories with moving pictures, sound and music. It was always fascinating to me that there was a piece of technology (video camera) that could capture images and play them back. It could capture an event or series of events and hold them to be watched again and again…like a memory that could be refreshed with each viewing and could be played back and most importantly, shared. Not only that but I could use these images to tell a story, visually. The possibilities are as endless as the imagination.

Who or what do you most admire?
I admire my Uncle, he has come a far way and beat overwhelming odds and become quite successful. All he had dreamed as a child has come true. I hope to inherit half his strength. I also admire nature, its resilience and beauty, it’s harmony and adaptability. I think that we as humans can learn a lot from nature.

What did you film on 10.10.10?
I was hoping to be in Jamaica for 10. 10. 10…but my Uncle had taken my Mom, Brother (who is also a filmmaker) and I on a Mediterranean Holy Land Cruise. So on 10. 10.10 I was in Haifa, Israel, enjoying the sights, Capernaum, the sea of Galilee, the mount of the Beatitudes and the Galilee Boat…I must say, I can’t complain, it was a marvelous experience. The history and the culture is so overwhelmingly alive. The people, so proud of their history and so willing to share it's stories. It is a fantastic place that I would love to visit again.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?
It’s hard to say…as I learned from the 10.10.10 experience, who knows where I’ll be on that day. But such is life…it is unpredictable and wonderful. However, wherever I am, wherever life has taken me, I will film something and share it with the world.

I seem to be hardwired for understanding the technical world of post and enjoy very much the craft of storytelling.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I grew up in Sydney, Australia, right on the beach. We had a huge expansive view of the horizon and the pacific ocean which we would just sit and stare at for hours watching the weather roll through its myriad of changes and fluctuations. Eventually I moved from this idyllic but slow moving place and ended up in the inner-city of Sydney for around ten years. Having a Norwegian father, I travelled to Norway to meet my family there and begin a working holiday and travel around Europe, but I ended up staying in Norway for five years where I married and had a son. We all moved to Tokyo in 2009 where my wife received a grant to study fine art, and I started trying to crack the local film making scene. Everything was going great this year until the earthquake in March, which was a bit of an interruption, but it seems that things are slowly returning to normal now.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I love fantasy and I love stories. Since I was a little boy I played classical piano and actually started a music degree at university after high school. At that time I was really into modern classical music and minimalist composers like Steve Reich - their music really captured modernity and my understanding of the world around me. I was also really in to photography and theatre and it seemed that film could provide for all my creative urges. Koyanisqaatsi was a real eye opener for me, because it communicated so much without any dialogue a very global film. Lately, I have wondered what it would be like to remake that film today using all the same locations, just to see the changes that have occurred over 40-50 years. I had a very active imagination as a child too, and am a sucker for fantasy films and sci-fi, and I am working on some feature film scripts to try and realise some of my own imaginings for the big screen, but it´s a long process, and in the meantime I have a hard time deciding what my specialty really is. For now I really enjoy editing and learning the art of storytelling. I hope to get more into fiction and feature film editing eventually, and have aspirations to eventually direct one of these days.

Who or what do you most admire?

I admire people who live to be old and remain sharp and active right until the end. People who know where they stand and that don´t fall for all the trappings of the modern world, but retain their humanity and humility.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

For 10.10.10 I made some time-lapse films in Tokyo from within the Tokyo Tower. I had to shoot through windows unfortunately, but the view is pretty spectacular so it was worth it. After a few hours up in the tower I then shot some footage in a nearby temple in this gorgeous evening light. The statues of buddha had all been decorated and people were making wishes and buying good luck charms as is the tradition here in Japan.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I will be teaching a class in production at about that time so I hope to incorporate 11.11.11 into my syllabus for the students. There will still be a lot of damage but also reconstruction activity happening in the north of Japan so perhaps we could manage a trip up there, but logistically that would be difficult. Some more focussed documentary style or storytelling would be nice to do this year.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I have studied architecture during two years. I don't have any diploma for the video. But i learn by myself, it's exiting !

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

I am inspired because I want to make documentaries. Use the video not the purpose of television that does not advance anyone, but talk about really important. Provide information that is most important. Humans lack of information, true information. We also lack of love, because we fear destroyed. I want to show the world that is beautiful, that man is beautiful, that life is beautiful. Talking bad things and we will create these bad things, talking about beauty and we will create beauty!

Who or what do you most admire?

I admire life. Its complexity and amazing simplicity. I admire people who are compassionate. I admire people who are busy to change consciousness. ODE work for that too! well done

What did you film on 10.10.10?

I have nothing prepared for 10.10.10. I wandered by being attentive to what was happening around me. I wanted to take that chance this would offer me. I wanted to be in the moment. I filmed what pleases or does not like. I filmed hunters, landscapes, sunset, peoples comeback from party by highway, nature... But I know when I was filming I was connected with the 12,000 other people in this project!

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

I don't have any plans. I have an idea to talk about the interconnectivity, shut it's a surprise ! But I know that I will be ready to shoot and show the LIFE beauty.

My other activities include film critique and the organization of the film festival and workshop called International KinoKabaret Berlin. Our group KinoBerlino invites film people to create their movies within 3x3 days in September and we screen them in a cinema, distribute them online and on DVD. We are part of the huge global Kino movement.

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

I was born in East-Berlin and grew up there. My interest in literature, film and culture in general was encouraged by my social network. So I experimented with photography and poetry for decades.

Before my film career I graduated from Humboldt-University Berlin with an MA in English, American and Cultural Studies. Currently I am looking for producers who would like to work with me on feature film projects.

If you want to see a brief interview about me, click here: http://vimeo.com/18848447

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

Cinema and television magnetize me and structure my life. The mighty media. I breathe film and create new works regularly, because I love practicing and the atmosphere on set. I found a flyer saying "shoot, cut & go" in 2005. So in my first KinoKabaret I made a film within 2 days and have become a director quickly. Now I manage the local event myself.

Who or what do you most admire?

Beauty. Period. There are a few famous directors whose work I admire, but you would scarcly find any resemblance between their commercial movies and my no-budget works. Film as the 7th art combines all other and earlier arts and sometimes elicits emotions. Focussing on narrative as well as acting and photography and combining them with sound, music, entertainment becomes increasingly important for me.

What did you film on 10.10.10?

In the night my friend Patrick and I filmed a board game from a tripod. At noon we went to an abandoned airport in Tempelhof (site of the Berlin airlift). This place has been reclaimed by the people and becomes a huge free space and park. The weather was very good, so many families and kites appeared in the park. We interviewed two girls. In the afternoon we met Milka, the Bulgarian fire dancer and talked to her on camera. She took me to a Mongolian gallery where Otgo the painter gave us an insight in his work and culture. Amazing. It would be great to have throat singing for the editors. In the evening we went to an old industrial district and Milka performed a fire dance rehearsal for One Day on Earth. Enjoy.

What are you planning on filming for 11.11.11?

Traditionally, that day marks the beginning of the "5th season" (carneval). So I might find some people in costumes who act drunk and do funny things. But I think there are many festivals in November, which I might have to attend.
